Am I not getting enough calcium from my multivitamin?
Multivitamins typically do not contain more than 200 or 300 mg of calcium. Even in the case of prenatal vitamins for pregnant women, the calcium content will likely not be enough to meet the daily demands of the mother and growing baby. A multivitamin may provide additional nutrients and vitamins that your body needs, but if your diet is low in calcium, you should consider taking a calcium supplement.
How do I choose a calcium supplement?
First, determine how much calcium you need every day. See the chart below for your recommended intake. Next, think about how many calcium-rich foods you include in your everyday diet, including dairy products and leafy vegetables. If you are like most people, you'll see that you're not getting enough calcium from your diet alone. For additional calcium, TUMS is a good tasting, cost effective, and highly efficient source. Decide which TUMS variety is best for you based on your calcium needs and diet. Different TUMS varieties have different levels of elemental calcium. Check the label of your supplement for the amount of elemental calcium per tablet.
How can TUMS be both an antacid and a calcium supplement?
TUMS contains calcium carbonate as an active ingredient. Calcium carbonate has the capacity to neutralize stomach acid, but it is also one of the most inexpensive and effective ways for individuals to receive adequate amounts of calcium each day. Indeed, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration recognizes and approves calcium carbonate as both an effective antacid and as a safe and reliable source of calcium.
What are the recommended intakes of elemental calcium?
How much calcium am I getting with each TUMS variety?
TUMS Regular Strength contains 200 mg of elemental calcium.
TUMS E-X 750 (Extra Strength) contains 300 mg of elemental calcium.
TUMS Smoothies (Extra Strength) contains 300 mg of elemental calcium.
TUMS E-X Sugar Free (Extra Strength) contains 300 mg of elemental calcium.
TUMS Ultra 1000 (Maximum Strength) contains 400 mg of elemental calcium.
TUMS Quik Pak contains 400 mg of elemental calcium.
Is it possible to take too much calcium?
It is unlikely that you will get too much calcium. Typically, any excess that the body cannot use is excreted in the urine and stool. Most people absorb calcium with no problems. If you have concerns about how much calcium you should be getting, please discuss this with your doctor.
When is the best time of day to take TUMS as a calcium supplement?
The body is only able to absorb a certain amount of calcium (about 500-600 mg of elemental calcium) at a time, so it is best to space out your calcium tablets throughout the day. Studies have shown that calcium absorption from calcium carbonate, the calcium in TUMS, is best when taken with meals. Also, as a matter of convenience and to establish a regular usage routine, it is advised that TUMS be taken with meals, unless directed otherwise by your own physician.
Can TUMS be used in conjunction with other medications?
Anyone who is taking prescription medications should follow the directions on the product label and/or consult a health professional before taking antacids at the same time.
How much calcium does a pregnant woman need?
Pregnant women need as much as 1,300 mg of elemental calcium per day. You should consult with your doctor about your individual calcium needs and before taking any supplements. The body is only able to absorb a certain amount of calcium (about 500-600 mg of elemental calcium) at a time, so it is best to space out your calcium tablets throughout the day.
Why take extra calcium if you're already taking a prenatal vitamin?
Most prenatal vitamins contain only about 200 mg of elemental calcium, far below the actual calcium requirements during pregnancy. To use TUMS as a daily calcium supplement during pregnancy, for example, you could take two TUMS E-X or TUMS Smoothies tablets with a morning meal and then two more with an evening meal. Those four tablets would provide a total of 1,200 mg of elemental calcium.
How long should pregnant women take TUMS calcium?
The average American woman is likely to be calcium deficient before and after pregnancy. The benefits of a calcium supplement are not limited to pregnancy, and women can continue to use TUMS to supplement their calcium need every day throughout life.
