Ingredient

Q.

What is the active ingredient in TUMS® antacids and where does it come from?

A.

The active ingredient in TUMS antacids is calcium carbonate. The calcium carbonate in TUMS antacid is processed from pure limestone, resulting in a high degree of purity.

Q.

Do TUMS® antacids contain lead?

A.

Lead occurs naturally in our environment. All animal and plant tissues contain small amounts of lead, as does the soil from which plants and plant-derived foods are grown. Consequently, nearly everything that we ingest - including water, cereals, fruits, vegetables and dairy products - contains lead in some small amount. Many calcium supplements with the active ingredient calcium carbonate (the most efficiently absorbed form of calcium), including TUMS antacids, are derived from sources where trace amounts of lead occur naturally. Since removing lead entirely is impossible, the goal in producing our product is to refine the calcium carbonate to a level where the lead content is in very trace, and safe, amounts. All of the raw materials that go into the TUMS product are assayed prior to manufacture to insure that the trace levels of lead meet the permissible level established by the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP), the body responsible for determining standards for strength and purity of drugs in the United States. The USP has set the lead tolerance level for calcium carbonate at 3 ppm (parts per million). By employing scrupulous quality control procedures, we ensure that every batch of TUMS antacids falls well below the 3 ppm level.

Q.

Do TUMS® antacids contain gluten?

A.

All TUMS smoothies products have been gluten tested and meet the guidelines for “gluten free” labeling.

Q.

Do TUMS® antacids contain animal by-products?

A.

TUMS antacids do not contain animal by-products.

Q.

Do TUMS® antacids contain aluminum?

A.

TUMS® and Pregnancy

Q.

What is the maximum dosage of TUMS® antacids for pregnant women?

A.

After a review of scientific information, the maker of TUMS antacid has decided to update the product label.  The new TUMS label will recommend a maximum daily dosage of calcium carbonate, which is the active ingredient in TUMS antacid, of 5,000 mg/day.  The reason for the update is that studies have shown that among pregnant women, a supplement dose of up to 2,000 mg/day of elemental calcium (equivalent to 5,000 mg/day of calcium carbonate) poses no undue risk. The safety of elemental calcium at doses greater than 2,000 mg/day in pregnant women has not been evaluated.  Please speak with your health care provider to determine the most appropriate way to treat your heartburn.  Please also note that TUMS antacid has an excellent safety profile when used as directed by the label on current products.

Q.

Can I take TUMS® antacids as a calcium supplement?

A.

After a review of scientific information, the maker of TUMS antacid believes calcium supplements are most effective for prevention of bone fractures when they also contain Vitamin D, and will no longer be labeled as a calcium supplement.  TUMS antacids do not contain Vitamin D.  Please speak with your health care provider to determine a calcium supplement and dose that is right for you.  Please also note that TUMS antacids have an excellent safety profile when used as directed by the label on your product.

Q.

I have heartburn because I am pregnant.  For how long should I take TUMS® antacids?

A.

Read and follow all label directions. While symptoms often occur intermittently and are short-lived, symptoms that persist may be a sign of something more serious. If symptoms persist for more than two weeks, please speak with your health care provider to determine the most appropriate way to treat your symptoms.

TUMS® Label Is Changing

Q.

What will change on the TUMS® label?

Additional changes to the label are:

- Directions to not take TUMS antacids for symptoms that persist more than two weeks unless advised by a doctor to ensure symptoms are being treated appropriately"
